IBMYP Areas of Interaction
In more ways than one, Maya Angelou has shown the IB areas of interaction.
Areas of Interaction
Environment: In her poems, Maya Angelou has written about the environment, not directly but in separate aspects of the environment. One of these examples is one of her most famous pieces, “I know why the Caged Bird sings.” In this poem, she has written about how a caged bird sings because of it is suffering and that is in fear and wants freedom.
Community & Service: Maya Angelou has definitely served her society in a major way. She has made a major impact on segregation. She fought against it through two ways, her life and her poems. Maya Angelou, during her lifetime has written poems about freedom. In “I know why the Caged Bird sings”, Maya Angelou wrote mainly about how the caged bird was suffering while restricted to its cage and how it needed freedom. This poem was actually based on real life. In real life, Maya Angelou fought against segregation. To show how it was unfair and made people suffer, she wrote poems based on it. Furthermore, Maya Angelou was one of the first African American women who were able to publicly discuss her personal life. She did so with courage as, at the time, doing something like that would be a huge risk. This served as inspiration to other African American women to stand up and also stand with her against segregation. She inspired them to also write poems to make an even larger impact on segregation.
Human Ingenuity: In a way, Maya Angelou has also displayed human ingenuity. She had found a creative way to fight against segregation. She wrote poems to show just how unfair segregation really was to make others see the truth. By writing poems and expressing her feelings, she displayed courage, inspiring other African American women to write poems or fight against segregation. So by just writing poems, Maya Angelou found a way to make others fight alongside her.
